As an artist I've always been very weak at filling in backgrounds with stuff or creating sets around people. It looks like DALL-E is very good at this, given this output it made of Girl with a Pearl Earring

Maybe this is a good use of ai, as a tool to fill in weak areas but not as a director

Intent is a big deal in art but much of what is so fun about art is the element of surprise. I may intend to paint a tree a certain way and then it turns out better than I intended.

12 years ago I was a graphic designer/marketing coordinator. One of the interview questions asked before I got the job was: “how do you get ideas?”

My answer was “I go to the library or bookstore and look at art books”. In a way this isn’t different than what DallE does, it simply soaks in input and creates an output much faster than I ever could.

Artists might be in John Henry’s shoes and have a lot of anxiety right now about getting beaten by machines, but luckily, art isn’t steel-driving

Put another way, it’s exciting to me to get outdone at art by another artist. It’s boring to get outdone by a machine.

But is it equal to the serendipity of sifting through art books in a library? Will it encourage us to depend on it and let it shape our imagination? Questions I often ask myself whenever I leverage Google image search :-/
