To be clear, I don’t mean the economics of commercial art (graphic design, advertising, illustration etc.), I mean, the economics of those significant artworks past and present that you learn about in class and that mysterious place called the “art world”.

There’s an opening discussion of the etymology of the word amateur and how the word in 19th century France was used to describe someone who literally admired art for its intrinsic qualities/beauty rather than profit as opposed to how we use the word today in a more negative way
