Its made of baked clay, but not your typical pottery clay. This piece has a glazed outside that actually is glossier than any pottery shard I've ever seen. Curious, as it was found under the same circumstances you'd typically find pottery.

Badass! I wonder how they made it so glossy? I know nothing about pottery besides just knowing what Marianas redware is.

For the glossiness, it's likely slip that was burnished with a highly polished tool, could have been shell or rock. Then based on the color it looks like they may have done a type of atmospheric firing that leaves lots of carbon trapped in the surface.

Basically. Slip is liquid clay from highly refined clay particles which can be done by pounding the already dried refined clay then slaking it again. In large batches you'd need a deflocculant to keep the clay particles in suspension, but for a small batch used quickly no need.

I've actually been researching different types of firings that are relatively easy to do. Just gotta find time between everything on my plate to make it happen. Bulalala pråyeks in my mind but unfortunately more pressing ones to deal with first.
