For me it exists like an acknowledgement of respect (in some instances) of someone's status, either relationally (kin or not), and perhaps also in terms of power (as in when you åmen the påle'). I'm still thinking of this idea though and haven't thought it through completely.

note how I put respect only in some instances. There's definitely an obligatory feeling sometimes that has nothing to do with respect of the person, but more so for the culture.
