Before starting, a firm understanding of dialectical scientific principle is needed. That is, the effect (climate chaos) cannot be “mitigated”/”solved” without the underlying processes that lead to its existence abolished. To kill capitalism + empire is to “solve” climate chaos.

Next, keep in mind that western hegemony requires the continued genocide of Indigenous ppl globally, and imperial expansion. The carbon + greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere are direct results of centuries of imperialist resource extraction and colonial genocide.

This is where we see the contradiction in WE: it wishes to address climate change without engaging with the mechanisms which gave rise to it. Despite claiming to be on the side of science, this is a firmly anti-scientific worldview.

Failing to incorporate an anti-capitalist and anti-colonial analysis, WEists conclude that a mere change in US leadership is sufficient for solving climate change. This puts practitioners on a dead end road, unable to address the systemic nature of the problem.

Thus, the most WEists can hope to achieve are concession by the ruling class to enforce regulations on industry. Yet contemporary science demands that we have few precious years remaining to completely transform economic relations, not just enforce carbon tax/credits.

The West can’t continue global domination. It can’t maintain capitalist exploitation of its workers. It can’t continue imperial plunder of the global south AND also make any headway on the climate problem. These relations must be abolished first.

And this is why you never see the NGO/thinktank punditry frame Indigenous sovereignty as a climate change issue. You’ll never see them acknowledge Black liberation as the foundational catalyst for solving ecological collapse.

They are so fundamentally limited by maintaining the global standing of the West, enforcing capitalism and imperialism, that they immediately concede defeat. Settlers can imagine full-scale eco death before they can imagine an end to empire.

Replying to @Lani4Pasifika
