Guam history was a required credit aside from Chamoru class, my freshman year. Somehow, it was abolished & grouped with everything considered “electives.” Saddening, because it went from being mandatory to learn to learn about it if you want.
-
Interesting. CNMI History was required for us in my hs too. It did include some about Guam, but there are huge gaps. I didn't start learning Guam history until I took polisci & CHamoru classes at UOG too.

Also to answer your other question, I wasn’t taught much about the NMI in Guam history. Just the names of our islands. Which is really disappointing because I gained more knowledge about BS then I did of my own people through the school system.

I get that frustration for sure. That is pretty sad.

My Guam history class was a disaster taught by a white man. We went by the book which has such an outdated closed perspective + his little ignorant two cents. I was mad most of that class. Guam history is a required credit, taken once in HS, Nothing was taught about NMI except -
-
small parts about WW2 and that’s it. However there are some awesome Guam history teachers that teach the true history and also include CNMI as well as the rest of Micronesia. I feel like it depends on your teacher tbh

I remember Guam History at JFK taught by Mr Eustaquio...20 years ago. Elementary (Maria Ulloa) and Middle School (San Vicente)was just Chamorro class.
-
Most of the knowledge I have gained over the years, came from my old folks....on Guam and Saipan.

There was a bit of NMI, but it was mostly about the war.
-
Yes our books were a lot about the war but more about Micronesia in general and what occured after it ended. I wish I remembered more but my class was taught by an old school teacher the old school way lol.
