Is this a sustainable use of the sea floor? Legit asking. It looks cool, and I think it might be an opportunity for local artists to express themselves BUT will it damage the ocean? @DeepPacificPod what you think?pic.twitter.com/sBythA95SK

If the statues were used to implant baby corals I'm sure it'll be great. The problem is getting everyone educated on not touching it..... Even for an innocent picture. Also I think limestone might be the best suited material.
Ahh, if they were to be used for coral recruitment and tourism, it would be somewhat at odds. We know that we cannot control what people are doing to things underwater without tour operator/bystander interference (& they have little incentive to enforce too), but its a great idea
Limestone is also not the best material because it erodes easily into water (just look at our cliffsides & how sharp they are from being shaped by the wave action), which is probably why those others used reef-safe coatings to slow the erosion.
As someone who worked w/ baby corals, their environment requires a lot of upkeep and as little human interaction as possible, so this would be a great alternative/deterrant to tourists taking pics on our reefs, they could definitely go to this place instead, which is better!
Ahhh nice. So maybe a granite statue to give coral polyps a sturdier base to grow on? And yeah I was also thinking of it being away from the actual reefs to keep people away from them! Just hope it doesn't become packed like Grotto to the point where the polyps are stressed.
Tbh, if we were to use them as recruitment for corals it would be best for them to recruit naturally (vs implantation) but that would also mean we would need to upkeep in terms of sending people to scrub the algae off every 2-3 weeks to keep corals competitive..which requires $$.
I hate how every road leads back to funding. Maybe we send tourists down with the scrubs

katdiba noh!! "Here, one for each of you, now get to WORK"
I wish we could do multiple statues in different areas and run each site differently for the purpose of studying our effects on each. Some with tourists, some without. Some we scrub, some we don't. Some we implant coral, some we leave to nature.
Expectations: above
Reality: one random latte stone the size of the ones at House of Taga

Shit i think that'd be nice too haha. Much simpler and symbolic.
