What's interesting is actually the Marianas where I'm from were the only Pasifika islands that cultivated rice as part of our ancient customs. This shows our ties to SE Asia very well.

Yes there’s fossilised rice powder found in some of the ancient swamps in Rarotonga, Cook Islands in the mountains which makes sense cause they’re laid out like rice terracespic.twitter.com/UOu9wybAah

They’re all mostly used for Taro now but the streams run through all 50+ in use terraces, its tucked up in the valley this used to be an old settlement now descendents of the same people who lived there cultivate the land it’s gorgeous

It does look gorgeous! Do you have a scientific source for that which you mentioned? I tried to look that up but couldn't find it. It does mention taro farming though.

I read an archaeological paper done on it a few years back by some Japanese archaeologists doing surveying in the 80s-90s if I can get my hands on it again I’ll let you know but there are multiple oral accounts of rice cultivation it just fell out of practice

Ahh ok! I'm not doubting you, but I was about to get frustrated at some colonizers for disregarding the Cook Islands as having rice during ancient times too lol. This is all I found on it, but it mentions taro farming only and rice farming as introduced.pic.twitter.com/IbGD60B1SM

Yeah no worries ! I will do some research the same group of Japanese archeologists did a number of other papers on the other islands in the Cook Islands so it shouldn’t be too hard, but this specific area was known as the “fruit bowl” due to the abundance and vast variety of food

Please update if you can find anything 🤓 I love reading about this kind of stuff!! Especially for other Pasifika places, I can only speak for mine but I love learning about others lol.
