Friends, I made this quick video in response to @AOC. In defense of St. Damien of Molokai: Part 1pic.twitter.com/Wj92fPBxbs

As a Hawaiian, I believe her video wasn’t about her having an issue with Saint Damien, but to point out the lack of women and people of color present. I do believe the point was missed by many who have seen this, though.

I agree with your point. Why aren't there more statues of important women and BIPOC?? Everyone who saw AOC's post would rather attack her than actually rally around the fact that she pointed out a problem on representation that needs to be changed.

Exactly. And the Catholic Church has been somewhat active on this issue — bringing in more women and non-white people as saints over the past decades. That’s what AOC is saying the US needs to do as well as we move into the 21st century.

I think the reason people are mad is the way she specifically singled out St. Damien. She could have made her point without singling him out and discrediting him. (1/2)

And to the point about not having women or people of color, every state chooses which two statues to send to the National Statuary Hall Collection. https://www.aoc.gov/explore-capitol-campus/art/about-national-statuary-hall-collection … So it was the people of Hawaii that chose St. Damian to represent the state. @AOC used a bad example. There are many statues of white suppremacists and colonialists but she picked someone who actually cared. I agree there are too few statues of women but she shouldnt have mixed the discussion about women's oppression with the issue of black downpression.
