      Chamorro Tweets Retweeted _ALUMSIK_

We’re supposed to be fighting through this, but Millennials and Zs, stop being surprised when older generations DO NOT want to collaborate with us on language learning. I’ve been actively discouraged from practicing in the past 1)https://twitter.com/_taotaomona_/status/1281415031821758464 …

@Lani4Pasifika @minatatnga thoughts on this ? I agree for Tahiti, older generation is very traumatized, so in order not to pass that on, we have to spare our youngins and choose wisely our teachers and support system

I actually had a tweet in my drafts for this! I agree. The older generation many times are quite discouraging to us younger ones wanting to learn. To push through, you just have to endure the kasse' (teasing) & being shamed for your accent.

But I think for me personally, I will tell my family that I'm learning and only want them to speak to me in Chamorro and don't want to hear them criticize me unless its constructive. Admittedly, not everyone can tell their parents this. I'm also in Chamorro classes on Saturdays.

I think for our future generations, its helpful to mentor young children and teach them somehow, because they reserve no judgements already. And to put into place safe spaces for learning for adults and children. Guam has a few, and CNMI might but I haven't heard of any/doubt it.
