When people say “racism is everywhere, it’s just a fact of life” what they really mean is “I don’t experience racism regularly, so it doesn’t bother me.” That’s called privilege and it needs to be acknowledged if society is going to move forward.

The fact that people have to experience anything to have it bother them is..like do we have to go to war and have our place bombed to feel bad for kids in Yemen and Syria??? Must you wait until you are raped to feel something for rape victims? I will never get it.

I’m always working towards not being mad at people not knowing what they don’t know. I didn’t come to these realizations until I wasn’t the majority anymore. I also understand only taking on as much as your heart and mental health can handle. It’s a delicate balance.

I acknowledge that me feeling passionately is a result of among other things not having many things to numb me growing up, and being able to have access to a support network of my sisters. Which are privileges themselves that not everyone has. I am still flabbergasted though.

I’m glad you had a support network. My mom’s a teacher and for 30 years she would tell me about her students’ lives and I realized having good parents and a safe home is a privilege as well. Ty for the love, doing my best every day to not be ignorant and not destroy myself.
