Once upon a time, there were colonisers-explorers-cartographers from the Spanish Empire who said, "ah all you 7,000+ islands in the west Pacific; y'all be named after our King Felipe II." The caucasityhttps://twitter.com/pstyrell/status/1263447904401780741 …

And then another empire, the United States, bought those 7,000 islands (peoples of 180+ languages) from the Spanish Empire for 20 million USD in 1898, without Filipinos in the negotiating table. If you're an American reading this tweet, were you even taught this part of history?

I thought we won them fair and square. Was it “You may fire when ready, Gridley” ? But I’m nearly 70. Students today drown in discussions of the yellow press, the Maine. Don’t have time for the rest of what we call the “Spanish American” war.

It wasn't fair. Far from it. At first, the Filipinos revolutionaries thought that the Americans were on their side during the Filipino revolution against the Spanish Empire. And then at the last moment Americans betrayed the Filipino revolutionaries.

Life isn't fair. Yes, I was taught that history. Yes, the U.S. stole half of Mexico, too. That doesn't make me personally a coloniser. Stop looking in the rearview mirror and start thinking about the future. And BTW don't ever call me a liar ever again.
