Put it this way: your DNA reveals everything about your family. Your family history of alcoholism, cancer, recessive twin genes, high likelihood of addiction or Parkinson's. It is like a book of your family's secrets, going back hundreds of years. It should be kept PRIVATE.

Yes! You give them EXCLUSIVE ACCESS to anything that could help them, or the Feds, in finding out whatever they want from it. The worst part is THEY PAY 23andMe to tell them these insignificant insights about them just to say "I'm 14% Spanish" (what the hell does that even mean).

I can totally see donating info to National Geographic to find out the origins of the Chamorro people. That's what I did in 2012. National Geographic isn't for-profit, I didn't have to pay, and they used my DNA only for this reason as stated in the disclosure I signed.

Oh yes! It's called the Human Genome Project and I was so happy to participate because I support scientific endeavors like that so much. The world learned about certain populations' genetic origins! Even Filipinos! Theirs were a bit similar to Chamorros
it was cool insight.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Another thing is they don't compare ppl based on actual country-level population data like "Spanish", "Japanese", etc. They do it based on population migration and regional gene flow, so like "43% South East Asian". Which makes more sense. So 23andMe don't even do it right

And people pay crazy money to satisfy that curiosity. Some things are better left unknown to the world in this case. I would love to find my Coloma family in Chile, but I'd do it the old-fashioned way and look at historical records. Maybe one day...
