Getting into long-term debt ia a choice that most of us had to make. We didn't get land handed down to us from our parents because they were displaced after the war and/or had no land to pass on. As someone who is halfway through a 30-year mortgage, I see your concerns.

I'm not from here and I'm thankful my parents have land to pass down to me on Saipan and Tinian.
Guam is where I really saw the after-effects of the war and militarization on locals.
