Was this confirmed officially? Not seeing CRB damage, the tree appears damaged by other insects and possible diseases. Can you confirm boreholes? They’re usually 2-3 inch holes on the trunk close to the crown. I’d report this to DLNR ASAP to confirm.

I can check today on my walk, but when I took island ecology my professor had told us the dead giveaway for rhino beetle damage was the diamond pattern. No one other insects eat the crown the way they do. But I will check again today!

Could very well be, sometimes machetes make the same markings when people harvest the leaves or cut the crown for whatever reason it can also make those v shaped cuts after the leaves grow again. The rotting on the leaves just make me want to look twice. Good looking out 💕

Whoever you are, I like you! I hope this is the reason. I saw some worse looking trees further down the road though, and my heart sank into my chest. But will update you with pics and DLNR response today.

Just wanted to confirm that it’s official! Roland Quitugua our extension specialist who works under the UOG CNAS Cooperative Extension & Outreach program had to go to Saipan to asses the damage a month ago.

😭😭😭😭 noooo. praying it gets attention quick. In that case definitely report to DLNR so they can note and scout the area for breeding sites.

Is this Jessica? 😂 I have a feeling Roland and Aubrey will be going back and forth to Saipan to help out. Roland has been in contact with DOA too over there in Saipan. But they are trying to protect Rota rn too.

Hunggan so far it’s “quarantined” in a small area of Luta a friend James Bamba is working to help eradicate them there. Their efforts have been amazing and are very serious about finding them.

The reason I felt it's a new infestation was because only a few trees out of every patch were affected. I'd see a healthy tree and the other two had damage. Then another damaged one next to a healthy one. All the way up the road. So it seems to still be in early stages. I hope.

They just discovered it this summer so they’re trying their best to eradicate them. They’ve been doing experiments to eradicate and catch them in the most successful way possible, just yesterday—I found out that they had a recent successful catch of countless CRB’s at Leo Palace

So they’re still finding out ways to eradicate them. We’re all trying our best 😭 as a community, we should have the responsibility to educate ourselves! Here’s a link, I suggest looking at the brochures and resources section to learn more about CRB: https://cnas-re.uog.edu/crb/
