danideru added,
I think...that was a Chuukese name thread. Carolinian names are in Refaluwasch. Their English names tend to be pretty "normal" by Western standards.
are Chuukese not colloquially considered Carolinians along with Yapese, Pohnpeians, Kosraeans? sym for the distinction w the thread.
As far as I know, it's a no. I know a few who are half Chuukese, half Carolinian. They are all from different islands, so they're different peoples. Not many Carolinians live on Guam as Chuukese. They are different even culture-wise..
ok, interesting! I'm curious to learn which islands Carolinian refers to (in nationality not language) since geographically Chuuk is in the Caroline Islands. like Satawal and other small islands? also I wonder if the meaning varies on Saipan vs Guam. thoughts @ChamorroTweets?
What's the meaning of Carolinian to you (who I assume grew up on Guam)? We were taught NMI history on Saipan, which includes a bit about how Carolinians migrated there.
@Hamferlife’s description is what my impression was, that Carolinian is the colonial catchall term for folks from the FSM and Belau. And nah, I’ve lived in CA/OR/TX and Saipan, thought most of my family is on Guam. I lived in Tanapag/Talaabwogh
I didn’t hear the term Chuukese used much when I was there tbh, mostly Carolinian in reference to nationality and canoe culture and Refaluwasch when it came to language and ethnicity. This made me realize I had never really asked any of my friends there specifically about it tho
That is so interesting. Definitely not whar I learned. I think the first wave of people who migrated from there in the Spanish times consider themselves Carolinian but as far as I know it's different. Idk if Chuukese on Guam consider themselves Carolinian.
That was my perception of the Carolinian community, that they came to the Marianas a long time ago and stayed, creating their own specific culture here.
Yes! This is it. So in a way, to use Carolinian as a catch-all term brushes aside the Carolinians of CNMI. Because they are a unique culture that are different from Chuuk. I'm not Carolinian, but I have close island sisters and friends who have explained these differences to me.
