The last thing proud people want is for anyone to feel sorry for them. To be referred to as "na' ma'ase" is probably one of the worst things to feel as someone from CNMI.
That being said, I had to give my guy a pep talk before seeing my family on Saipan. Their house is by not in the worst condition it could be in, but the roof did leak majorly in a few places. No power besides the generator. No refrigeration. Cars damaged. I had to prepare him.

"Don't feel sorry for them. They've been through much worse. There are other people who have lost their house and all their cars. They'll probably joke around about it like they usually do." People there are still waiting on FEMA. They're out there surviving the holidays. Man.

Tough people will persist, come what may. But for someone who grew up in comfort, never having to endure long power outages, I'm sure he will be shocked, but also happy to see he's marrying into a strong family who can make it through
