A study in contrasts: 4-port EA site, one broken, the rest won’t go over 35kW… Right across the parking lot a 16-port Tesla V3 SC, all working (according to PlugShare) max output 250kW.

Cant be bothered to help a fellow EV driver avoid wasting time given their car can’t even plug into a DCFC but can take their picture to dunk on them on the internet “for the mission” 🤡🤡🤡

This poor family has been trying to charge their Toyota Plug In Hybrid for over 15 minutes. Meanwhile, I charged my Tesla from 7% to 56% at the Tesla Supercharger next to them.

Tesla owners now crowdfunding long term maintenance of their cars, since the company cut so many corners that the vehicles do not last… (Ask me how I know; I also had a 2013 MS. Luckily I hit the bid and got rid of it before it completely fell apart)

How on earth does someone with almost 100 traffic tickets still have a drivers license

Incredible. After David Simon's tirade about a camera speeding ticket the other day, Streetsblog dug in to find he has more than 96 traffic tickets! nyc.streetsblog.org/2023/08/11/wir

Completely solvable with my 3-step plan: 1. Ramp up automatic traffic law enforcement (speed cameras and red light cameras) 2. Lower speed limits 3. Separate traffic enforcement from regular policing

On this World Day of Remembrance, we should recognize that the soaring number of US crash deaths reflects a uniquely American failure. Traveling in other rich countries is much, much safer. A 🧵 for #WDoR2022

My buddy bought a Model 3 at the end of Sept (over my objections of course) - drivers seat back has already fallen off and the roof leaks when it goes through the car wash 🤦‍♀️

Create a $700B stock with this one weird trick: Ignore all laws/regulations and when agencies try to enforce them, just tell them to “F off”

Great analysis of reporting by @lorakolodny and yours truly on Tesla's rampant disregard for environmental rules at its Fremont, CA paint shop. It's beyond mystifying that this story never got wider traction... the hypocrisy and criminality on open display is staggering. twitter.com/ESGhound/statu…

After telling everyone for years their cars will be robotaxis and saying that autonomy is a “solved problem” Tesla rolls out early access to “Full Self-Driving Beta” which requires the driver to acknowledge is not autonomous.

Some *professional* news: after 6 great years I am heading off to new adventures. It’s been a privilege to work with so many esteemed colleagues to move the needle on electrification in the Southeast and Midwest. Thanks to all who helped along the way ⚡️⚡️⚡️

361k EVs sold in the US this year!! That’s an 81% increase YOY vs 2018, pretty incredible. Mostly on the back of Tesla’s Model 3 success.

Meanwhile in the US, NYC is trying out 10 electric buses.
Quote
In Shenzhen, a city of ~10 million, all buses (17,000) are already electric; by next year, all taxis will be; and by 2020, all Didi will be required to be electric. Every new parking space is to have a charger. Policy + technology indeed. twitter.com/NicLutsey/stat

Big fan of the mobile connector including a 14-50 plug - lots of houses have 14-50 outlets already and if you don’t it’s <$100 of electrical components to put one in ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Only fair to post the good experiences too: 3 days of road tripping, 1,100mi, 3 different CCS cars, 500+kWh of charging on EA and no significant issues ⚡️⚡️⚡️

PSA: never keep an EV past the 8yr battery warranty window. I’m overall bullish on EVs but the car market has not yet internalized the reality of the cost of batteries failing outside the warranty window.

Commercial MD vehicles are the killer app for BEVs: perfect duty cycle, high annual utilization, large(ish) market, charge overnight on L2. Most important EVs released in 2022 were the e-transit and EDV ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Lancaster, California, spent $11.5m creating a pedestrian-friendly downtown. In just four years, it attracted $130m private investment, doubled its downtown tax revenue, created 48 new businesses and 800 new jobs, and road injuries decreased by two-thirds. Cities are for people.

Gotta respectfully disagree with my colleague - while Tesla has greatly improved build/ride quality of Model Y &has the best charging network, imo best value EV SUV is still the ID.4: 275mi of real range for $44k and tons of cargo space⚡️⚡️⚡️

I realize it’s not simple, my question was a bit tongue in cheek. If I was a city I would identify certain areas and run a bunch of 14-50 outlets, then prohibit use of generators in those areas.

The US sold 918,000 new EV last year, representing new annual electricity demand of about 3.67 TWh. Yet the US also created 96 TWh of fresh electricity last year entirely from new wind+solar. Our clean power growth swamps new EV demand. More in tomorrow's @TheGregorLetter
