β€œThe idea is that all libraries need to be able to continue to lend books, preserve old editions of books, and protect patrons’ privacy,” Kahle told Motherboard. β€œAll libraries are fighting these fights against corporate publishers.”

I wrote about the @internetarchive verdict for @motherboard. People who care about digital ownership have had a rough week, that's for sure. vice.com/en/article/y3w

Publishers are going to screw over any student using IA for books not easily available anymore. Several books I’m using for my thesis as sources aren’t available unless I pay exorbitant prices for a physical copy, as they’re out of print, hence having to use IA. twitter.com/internetarchiv…

Today’s lower court decision in Hachette v. Internet Archive is a blow to all libraries & the communities we serve. But it’s not overβ€”we will keep fighting for the traditional right of libraries to own, lend, and preserve books. Learn more & take actionπŸ‘‡

Despite all attempts to recover all these attributions & claims, 350k have evaporated. More than 1M occurrence records had been removed from the index by one dataset, the greatest single-point loss since Bionomia launched 4.5 years ago.

Began another refresh of data from @GBIF but there'd be a risk of disconnecting 400k+ links scribes have made to collectors/determiners. Time to fan out some email inquiries to data publishers, wait for repairs to be made, and then start all over again...

🧡: More than you may realize, this raises important qstns about anti-indigenous massacres on . BRM page uses the "military conflict" infobox template, which provides the "belligerents" on both sides language. Incidentally, so does the Wounded Knee Massacre page. 1/26
Wikipedia infobox of Wounded Knee Masscre. Labeled as "Part of the Ghost Dance War and the Sioux Wars." Describes belligerents as United States and Miniconjou and Hunkpapa Lakota. Describes casualties and losses as 31 killed and 33 wounded for US, 90 killed and 4 wounded for Lakota. Below that is a note that 200 civilians were killed and 46 civilians were wounded.
The infobox of the Wounded Knee Massacre page in edit mode. Clicking on the box reveals the template: "Infobox military conflict"

Big problem with @Wikipedia entry for Bear River Massacre (Jan. 1863). Describes U.S. Army and Shoshones as "belligerents." There was only one "belligerent" and it wasn't the Shoshones. Also, no citation to Darren Perry's 2019 book on the subject @shoshonelder
