you should read Loonshots :) part of the problem is that people try to direct what makes a company successful after they succeed when in reality it's a lot of luck and coincidence

e.g. with Amgen, they were on the verge of bankruptcy and had no scientific breakthroughs whatsoever. they were only successful because of one drug (erythropoietin) because the scientist who had the key to it gave it to them over their competition, Biogen.

(Biogen' CEO refused to pay for dinner) Amgen made the drug and started pulling in $10b annually and sued all of their competitors out of existence. they were successful in the sense that they destroyed all their competition ("a law firm with a drug")
