My grandfather spent his life savings to buy an apartment in the second tallest tower in Gaza: the same building housing the AP and Al Jazeera bureaus that was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday. I wrote about all the homes he lost for

I admire the National Press Club’s steadfast commitment to calling for justice for Shireen Abu Akleh over this past year and hope that other journalistic organizations follow their example.

A year ago today, an Israeli soldier shot and killed the beloved Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh while she was on assignment. She was wearing protective gear that was was clearly labeled “press.” Here’s what I wrote at the time.

This is where Israeli forces targeted and shot our #ShireenAbuAkleh a year ago today at 6:31 LT and while we still do not know the soldier who pulled the trigger, we know there’s a long chain of command and a world that’s not doing enough to hold them accountable.

Please take the time to read about the exceptional human being that is Shireen. We honor her by remembering her, by learning more about her, by recalling all that is beautiful about her.

Shireen used her voice to report on the Palestinian people for more than 25 years and paid the ultimate price. The least we can do is use our voices to tell her story and ensure that it ends with justice and accountability. 16/16

Shireen did not just cover wars and military raids, but also the daily indignities of life under Israel's occupation: oppressive checkpoints, detention of children, destruction of olive trees. Tens of thousands of Palestinians attended her funeral because she was an icon. 15/16

Palestinian journalist Mujahid al-Saadi, who was with Shireen when she was killed, said he will continue working. "To whom will we leave the coverage? To whom will we leave the suffering of the Palestinian people? Who will report our pains and joy to the world?" 14/16

Shireen's colleagues are still reeling from the trauma of witnessing her killing. Shatha said, "None of the things that died inside me under that tree will come back." Ali said Shireen's voice and her last words about him being shot ring in his ears constantly. 13/16

Though Shireen was a U.S. citizen, has declined to meet with her family. When he spoke about press freedom at the White House Correspondents Dinner, he was silent about her case. But everyone who cares about press freedom should call for justice and accountability. 11/16

When we look back at it, it’s possible that Shireen Abu Akleh’s shooting will be the most thoroughly investigated killing of any Palestinian in history and yet no one has been held accountable. What does that tell you? 10/16

The Israeli military never released the sniper’s body camera footage or any details of the investigation. We don’t even know their name. Yet the U.S. has expressed confidence in the investigation. A year later, there has been no justice and no accountability in her killing. 9/16

After Shireen’s killing, Israel followed a familiar script: deny, obfuscate, try to control the narrative. quickly debunked their story that a Palestinian fighter killed her. How many cases are there in which false narratives stuck and were repeated by the media? 7/16

A logical conclusion is that that area is one that only a sniper targeting her would choose. Anyone in the sniper’s line of vision was shot at, like journalist , who had looked up to Shireen as a role model. She tried to reach over to touch Shireen and was shot at. 5/16

They approached carefully and then shots rang out. Ali was shot in the shoulder. Shireen’s last words were recorded by her longtime cameraman. "Ali has been wounded." Then, Shireen was shot in the area behind her ear that happened to be exposed, between her helmet and vest. 4/16

By now, we know the facts of the story but they bear repeating: On the day she was killed, Shireen, who worked for , was wearing a helmet and a blue vest clearly marked with the word PRESS. So were her colleagues. 3/16

Shireen was a brave journalist but she was also a cautious one. By all accounts, she didn’t take unnecessary risks and always made herself known to the heavily-armed Israeli soldiers whose actions she was covering. Her colleagues say that's what they did that day. 2/16

May 11, 2022 - a year ago, journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed. The day started like any other. Her producer, Ali Al Samoudi, called to tell her about a raid in Jenin. Shireen always slept with her phone ringer on, ready to cover the news. After 6 am she was on the road. 1/16

It is a strange relief familiar to Palestinians to remember that your grandfather is already deceased as you watch Israel bomb Gaza yet again.

"it is irrelevant to ask how many children were incidentally killed" This man served for two decades within the Israeli Military Advocate General, including providing legal advice to the armed forces. #Gaza

One year memorial mass for my dear aunt Shireen Abu Akleh. It was a beautiful service! The priest said Shireen exemplified truth and was the voice of truth. May your memory be eternal❤️ I miss you, always.
