Given the consistently high trust for the 95% CI, we wanted to test if part of that trust was due to the label indicating “95% confidence.” So we conducted a follow-up study where we changed the figure caption to read as 25, 50, 95, or 99% but left the interval size the same. 6/8

Consistently, people had high trust in visualizations that showed less visual information, including 95% CI, a single median forecast, and grayscale encoded forecasts. The 95% CI and the median forecast also consistently produced poor performance in the trend judgment task. 5/8
