There is a false expectation that everyone or majority will own a house. The truth is, it is not possible. A deposit is required plus keeping up the payments on average salary of £25-£30K how long you think they will take to save up and still meet other expenses.

Isn’t that a bit misleading though? I don’t think 9 out of 10 were home owners in 97. A lot more were in Council housing than now

And of course more over 65s will own their homes outright as they are old enough to have paid off their mortgage
