New blog post alert: I used Wasserstein distances to analyze some fMRI data, and found it to be a really useful and intriguing tool: 1/7

These results were intriguing enough that I decided to make my code available in this Github repo: I still have a number of questions about what this method can teach us about the brain, so if you use this method, let me know what you find! 7/7

Second, we ran a Representational Similarity Analysis on data from and and found that brain-behavior correlations were *lower* when using Wasserstein distance vs. correlation distance to calculate the neural dissimilarities: 6/7

So excited that we tried it out on some data. We ran 2 analyses using Wasserstein distances: First, we calculated the inter-subject reliability in the dataset from my recent preprint () and found that it was pretty reliable! 5/7

So when told me about Wasserstein distance, which does take this proximity into account, I got excited. 4/7

As a field, we generally measure representation geometries without thinking about maps -- similarity metrics like correlation distance don't take into account how close 2 response patterns are in the brain. 3/7

In my research, I spend a lot of time thinking about 2 things: 1. the brain's representational geometry (what kinds of things a brain region treats as "similar") and 2. maps (how the brain's responses change across the cortex). 2/7

In every session of , a PhD student tells me that they don’t have time to sleep, exercise, or socialize because they have so much work to do. I tell them that’s like saying they don’t have time to put gas in their car because they have so far to drive.

How do people feel about papers with co-first authors? I think its a really neat idea, and potentially really good for science! Rather than making a 'brand' or competing with people with overlapping interests, we can just work with people with overlapping interests! pls retweet!

    5) Goats have horizontal pupils, and as they raise and lower their heads their eyes rotate so that the pupils are always parallel to the ground, giving them a 360° view of potential predators

I'm currently writing a grant on using EEG and fNIRS to study prediction, surprise, and belief formation in adults and infants. Combing the literature for the neural basis of prediction and surprise, especially in the context of scene perception. What should I be sure to read?

Still one of the most amazing dance sequences I've ever seen on film. Unrehearsed, one-take, and the studio built bleachers on the sound stage so all of the other stars on the lot could come and watch 'em do it. Superhuman.
