I think one of the genuine draws of platformers is the art and the creation of it. Drawing people from the side is very natural, and it is very expressive - much more so than overhead perspectives.

... the assets. If you show your pixel work online it's hard to present it perfectly without giving it away. My technique here is a 4x nearest neighbor zoom and then a 99% bilinear resize.
