    Crawford says it's true that it's a long way from the Tree Committee in Medford, Massachusetts to the Pentagon, but civil society is pushing cities, and cities are driving change.

    Crawford says climate change was labelled "an urgent and growing threat" in the US National Security Strategy 2015, and was viewed as a threat by Jim Mattis in the Trump administration in 2017, but this was later "dropped" as a threat to national security.

    Professor Crawford says fuel reliance has long been seen as a vulnerability by the military, particularly since fuel tankers etc can be attacked in conflict. It is therefore in its interest to reduce its reliance on and use of fuel.
