You can’t even go shopping at Walgreens in SF. What is left to defend?

For those wondering... many Walgreens have put anything valuable behind a lock because there has been so much rampant theft from shoplifters with no consequences. Here’s a video I took at the one closest to me. They got rid of most cosmetics altogether.pic.twitter.com/627ByVPG07

But why? What happened to Sensotronics, RFID-tagging and all those anti-shoplifting technologies that US / SF / SV companies sell all over the world? Don't they work at Walgreens?

Partially because prop 47 classified minor theft (<$950) as a misdemeanorhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_California_Proposition_47 …

Before Prop 47, these technologies would ferret out felonies. After Prop 47, can't they still be used to ferret out misdemeanors?

the problem is not detecting theft. I've seen people grab things at Walgreens and walk out the door. The employees yell at them but they are not going to run after them and tackle them.

OMG. Not saying I don't believe you but I find it hard to digest that this sort of daylight robbery could happen so brazenly in a first world country! (Probably it happens in the night, too!)

Nope daily occurrence. I’d see people at my local Safeway walk out with a bottle of wine or whatever all the time. I asked the clerk and they said “Why would I case and then put myself at risk of being beaten up.”

OMG! Don't stores have any right to protect their property?

the stores understandably, tell employees to not protect the merchandise, no one wants to see employee or customer injured or worse over sundries
Some combination of @SFPD & DA @chesaboudin contribute mightily whether its lack of resources or unwillingness to charge these crimes
