This is cool ... and I agree that local news is a type of infrastructure for a free society. However, I often see attempts like this as ways to prop up big companies that are largely to blame for the situation journalism finds itself in right now.https://twitter.com/LIONPubs/status/1383121783327363073 …

Agree. Same with billions of legally mandated Public Notice advertising that flow almost exclusively to pay-to-read print newspapers. Make that ‘need to know’ info Civic Infrastructure — federal + foundation funds to bolster state + local, invest in ALL local media

Pennsylvania citizens and taxpayers (and legislators) have no clue that we pay $1.5 million just to advertise 1 proposed constitutional amendment. There are 4 on the spring ballot. 95% will never see. Most won’t even realize you don’t need party affiliation to show up at polls.

I truly wish we had a direct, federally funded system for local news to fill the gaps the profit system has left us...imagine if every town had a small newsroom with reporters that were paid a living wage to cover local events! Hell, we could do it through the post office!

To a large extent, I think smaller, local publishers can succeed without direct government support. On the other hand, local, state, and federal governments directing public notices and ad campaigns to local pubs can be a huge help.
