Sometimes London's Lost Rivers are found. This is urban rewilding. Firs Farm was a bland park & bumpy football pitches. Moore Brook was trapped in a pipe. Thanks to it's now a glorious wetland. The football pitches are smooth. Flood risk cut.

North London's Lost Rivers get lots of attention. I want to send a little love to those south of the Thames. The River Neckinger once flowed from where the Imperial War Museum is. It would've been a marsh. From here past Elephant & Castle to Bermondsey. Now just a street sign 😪

Virtually where the Pancras Road now runs, the River Fleet once flowed. We've swapped cars for water. The Fleet is trapped below ground. The curve of the road towards Kings Cross a clue to the majestic river's former presence.

has undergone a huge transformation and is now a haven for wildlife. flows through a series of wetland SuDS cells before returning underground near the A10. A lovely place for a wander.

River Graveney is in the left, Norbury Brook on the right. Brook of course is a descriptive term. As to the ecology there isn’t any. It’s a dead river. I guarantee you since the last ice age there were wild brown trout in this river with the ecosystem to support them. No more.

Finding cotton buds & teeth cleaners on the banks of the Thames means there's been a sewage spill. Thames Water is breaking the law & should be telling us when all of its sewers spew. Sanitary waste shouldn't be flushed AND we must have real-time alerts

This is what environmental deregulation looks like. Crucially it's not about cutting the Obama rules but undermining the 1972 Clean Water Act, a global beacon of non-partisan law making (still some of the most potent environmental laws in history). Will be fought by

The mighty tidal Thames can be a very delicate river. Here it is edging up the Bell Steps in Hammersmith. Just before the tide turns the river looks like it has stopped. A moment of tranquility in London.

I love this example of how to treat a lost river in Enfield, the uncovering of Moore Brook and the creation of Firs Farm Wetlands - Thanks to the visionary and local people! Plus side benefits like smooth football pitches.

The Brimsdown Ditch is one of the most forgotten and least loved rivers in Enfield. It suffers badly from industrial pollution and litter

From what I've seen this is the most polluted tributary of London's most polluted rivers. The Brimsdown Ditch, which flows to the River Lea via Salmons & Pymmes Brooks. Run-off from industrial estates in Enfield drain to it. It can smell of fuel or be blighted by garish liquids.

A car park that's river-saving, pollution-busting & flood preventing. The porous surface stops oil, microplastics from tyres + heavy metals getting washed to the River Ravensbourne. It slows run-off too so the river isn't overwhelmed.
