For years, California police officers come into court & testified as “gang experts.” But many of the ppl they convicted--all black and brown--were not in a gang. It was all made up. And the scandal is only getting bigger and worse.

Today I witnessed ⁦⁩ and ⁦⁩—2 of the 3 candidates for LA County District Attorney—spend their entire afternoons at Lancaster prison listening to people who won’t be able to vote for them.

Did you know California State Prison, LA County is the only state prison in CA’s largest county? It is home to 3,000 incarcerated people. Today, 40 of those men will join us for a town hall with DA candidates & .

My dad, whose spirit animates all I do, got 22-55 years for possession & sale of weed. He’d have died in the cage to which they condemned him had he not become a jailhouse lawyer and freed himself through making his frozen circumstances dance by playing to them their own melody.

Today was the first ever District Attorney Debate in a prison. We talked issues, we talked vision... but most importantly we affirmed our commitment to humanity and dignity. Being incarcerated shouldn’t mean you get cut out of being civically engaged- and for me it never will.

I was told last night that being a former public defender doesn’t make me a “real lawyer”. I represented people regardless of class, race, & gender. I fought injustice. I kept hope alive. I’m not just a real lawyer- I’m the realist. And I’ll be an outstanding DA too

The worst thing about Jackie saying PDs aren’t real lawyers is that it perpetuates the urban myth that PDs are not real lawyers. This is the Trump move of saying the quiet part out loud. Reflects the culture of her office and what is said behind closed doors. Shameful.

Crazy to say that a public defender isn't a real lawyer. It doesn't get any more real than being a public defender.

At least once a week, when I say I'm a legal aid lawyer, I'm asked if that means I'm a paralegal.

I'm not gonna lie--the audience protests we're seeing at the break my heart. We're seeing people shouting at a public official who is *supposed to represent them* but who has, for *years* refused to speak with them. This is not what a public official is supposed to do.

. raises the racial disparities in LA county, noting that being black makes you 13x likelier to be arrested in LA. She's not wrong that the DA's choice to prosecute/not prosecute certain offenses absolutely influences police choices.

I'm not gonna lie, it's really awkward to hear Lacey talking about race at the while Black Lives Matter is *literally* at the debate protesting her inaction to protect black and brown folks.

. claims violent crime is rising under Lacey, which does make sense--when leaders fail to take action on police misconduct, people get scared to call the police, even when something bad happens. Without police accountability, you have no community buy-in.
