We went into the heart of Brexit territory to hear what people are thinking now. Ouch. "I can’t believe that a bunch of so-called adults who are supposedly running Great Britain have made this look like a John Cleese comedy show.”

There’s been a lot written about Notre Dame de Paris, not so much about this other Notre Dame, in ruins now for nearly a decade. Brilliant piece by

Spain's socialist party won the plurality of seats in elections, but will need to pact with other parties — likely Podemos on the left + nationalists — to form a government.

I was shocked when we moved to LA and every shul we visited had armed guards. But I remember how terrifying it was at our old Brooklyn shul after Tree of Life, where 50 kids played behind an unlocked door every Shabbat. I hate seeing guns every time we pray, but I'm less scared.

I see the writer's point. But maybe high-end fashion magazines are not the best example. The day that high-end fashion mags feature "everyday" people is the day we no longer have high-end fashion mags.

It's a conundrum for our times: How much security is appropriate for a house of worship, which by its nature should be welcoming and evoke peace?

The other day I called a man in the Mississippi Delta for a story. At the end of our chat, I asked him what his official title is. He paused and said it was complicated. And then he told me a story so crazy I almost couldn’t believe it was true:

China is holding the BARF (Belt and Road Forum 😁) this week amid criticisms that it’s trying to trap developing countries in too much debt, and then seize their assets

I went to Yakutsk in March to meet a group of punks who play under the label Юность Севера, or Youth of the North. Yakutsk is one of the coldest cities on Earth. There's not much to do when it's -50 F,. So they started making music

Some great reading in today. Check out on China's Belt & Rd; Robyn Dixon on camps to toughen up 'sissy boys'; on punk rock in Siberia; and on the rise of the far right in Spain.

China has been criticized for using its 'Belt and Road' initiative to trap developing countries into debt. One pertinent point in this fascinating, well-balanced piece by is that the World Bank may have a worse record when it comes to debt.

This is a painful story about China's fear that its boys are insufficiently masculine. State media uses terms like "sissy pants" to refer to K-pop idols who are influencing many young Chinese, and there's a "Real Man Training Club" to make boys more macho.
