Have you heard of pod living? You sleep in a small space usually in a communal environment. In LA, it started out mostly for tourists & newbies staying briefly. Now it's long-term housing for some. I write about it in today's column. https://lat.ms/2q8gNI1  (Watch this thread.)

I started my tour of the pod world on a little residential street in Hollywood, at what looked like many other mod apartment buildings at first.pic.twitter.com/50TDxtt4HI

The 4 furnished apartments have fancy kitchens, deep sectionals, shiny bathrooms. They come with daily housekeeping, linens, towels, pots & pans, for under $950 a month per person. You even get free shampoo, hotel style.pic.twitter.com/77fhitsXLV

There’s just one thing. Each of the 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom single-Sex apartments is designed to house 18 people — in pods. They are nicely outfitted. The mattresses are comfy. But they are small. They remind me of berths in a railway car or a rock band’s tour bus. No standing up.pic.twitter.com/crbmOVALLT

By the way, Mike says he usually crawls into bed around 2 a.m. and sleeps soundly. Though Eddy does put ear plugs in the tote it gives people when they move in.

Pods are not for everyone. I know they’re not for me. But they interested me enough to want to know more about who is sleeping in them. I hope you will take the time to read the column. Here’s the @PodShare version of the form in Venice.pic.twitter.com/apQfgjjXNM

I like to think about how our city is changing and who it's changing for, for better or worse. I like to look at what I don't understand up close and try to get to know it, for you and for me. I hope you'll join me & read my columns. Find them at http://latimes.com/nita . Thanks.

Fascinating story! Not to quibble but quibbling anyway: a pair of socks is 2 socks.

There have been a few quibbles about the socks/shoes count, @stephenflipmass, but I respect your logic.

i see the logic in this but what does he wear when it's time to do laundry? or does he do it naked and the room/podmates don't mind?
