I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.

Goodbye EU. Thank you for the flowers. Buster was in Year 9

I was born in Brussels. Lived there for most of my primary school years. Being a European has always been as much part of my identity as being British. This is sad but also moving to see.

Interested in papyri and making art and theatre out of them? I'm going to be on a panel at with and on 17th March talking about papyrology and our project :

I had a few hours this morning before the conference to explore Leiden. The world was my oyster. I could have gone to a gallery, a museum, done some clothes shopping, sat with a novel and drunk coffee... I found myself in a toy shop buying little wooden toys

And it felt really awkward to write and check. So I spent a good few minutes worrying about this before realising that I was being so British that I was actually contemplating agreeing to write a chapter on a topic I know nothing about to avoid social embarrassment.

But having been off work for a year, my first thought after “they must have sent this to the wrong person” was “did I somehow agree to contribute to this volume right before I went on leave because it all seemed such a long time off?” /2

I got an email asking me to sign a contract for a book chapter I agreed to do a year ago before I went on maternity leave. But due to a typo the book title and editors in the email were wrong - still Classics, but a totally different sub-field that is nowhere near my area. 1/

And obviously come and see the show too if you like off beat and quirky creative Greek stuff. It will be opening in London at the end of April and in Oxford for 2 nights end of May. I will definitely be tweeting details. Maybe I can get the socks onstage!

Once I've sorted the pattern, it strikes me this could be an awesome way of raising some more funding for my theatrical collaboration with to produce a show inspired by Greek papyrus fragments. You can already support them here: .

My socks appear to have gone viral! For fellow knitter-Classicists, I think I'm going to write up the pattern properly (and maybe work out a women's size version too as these ones were for a man's foot) and then stick it up on Ravelry.

I have basically nothing with me because I don't need nappies, wipes, snacks, toys, and so my bag is weirdly light. I left the house with zero warning or negotiation beforehand. I have spent no time trying to persuade anyone else to try going to the toilet.

On my way to first conference since having baby #2. So far I've got bus to Heathrow, waited at terminal for ages, sat on plane cos takeoff delayed, walked miles around Schiphol, and caught train to Leiden. All without any children involved. I feel like I'm on a spa break.

I am not really doing Twitter at the moment, but I have to share the news that I just finished knitting a pair of geometric vase socks for the other Classicist in my life. This is probably my best ever academic work.

Retweeting this thread because we’re nearly in 2020 & there are still establishments in UK discouraging breastfeeding mothers. For the record, it is illegal to ask someone who is breastfeeding to leave a public space. It’s also just a really shitty thing to do. Here’s why:

The Tories' decision to drop the commitment to unaccompanied child refugees post-Brexit is a moral disgrace. The Government should scrap New Clause 37. Retweet if you agree.

All the staff were trying their best and were unfailingly kind when they saw me, and doing their best to ensure that my baby got all the checks she needed, despite the pressure they were under. The system, however, is clearly a mess.

She still took a minute to try to palpitate my baby's bladder to see if she could get her to wee. (It didn't work, but I appreciated the attempt).
