The Spruce Goose, Howard Hughes' flying sea plane. After it was displayed next door to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, I believe it was purchased by a city in Oregon and moved there. The dome is still there-- remember seeing a Star Trek exhibit there about ten years ago.
-
The dome is now the Carnival Cruises terminal. The Spruce Goose is so-named because Hughes was trying to build an air transport for the war effort using wood, since steel was in short supply. The press derisively called it the Spruce Goose, and the name stuck.
