2020 has been a year of trials and tribulations—a year that has tested the human spirit. Through it all, the men and women of the LAPD continue to stand fast in our collective pledge to protect and to serve. From my family and the men and women of the LAPD—.

Gang Enforcement Officers from continue the work to keep you safe—this time by arresting and recovering three guns from a convicted felon as a result of a traffic stop. The motto, “to protect & to serve”, continues 24/7, 365 days a year.

LAPD Sergeant Cleon Joseph is a father, a husband, a son and a brother—to Angelenos, he's a public servant. His parents, who raised 41 foster children & helped the homeless, showed him the value of giving back. After 25 years of LAPD service, he continues that family tradition.

LAPD officers are not only combating crime, but addressing quality of life concerns. When officers were made aware of a wheelchair access issue, they quickly ensured the proper notifications were made. It's in our Core Values: Service to Our Communities.

As we head back to the station to end the night, we have an opportunity to hear from Sergeant Garcia, supervisor of the LAPD's Street Racing Taskforce. He provides us with great information, and has important messages for those involved in these illegal and dangerous activities.

The crowd has gathered again, this time in the area of Vernon and San Pedro. When we show up, several cars speed away, driving recklessly on the wrong side of the road. As you can imagine, when they got stopped they had excuses— but it was a ticket and another impound.

Unfortunately, social media attention is a big motivating factor for those who engage in this illegal activity. After a video gets posted online of a vehicle doing burnouts, the taskforce is able to quickly locate it, cite the driver and impound the car.

Fortunately no one was injured at this takeover. And although education is a component of the taskforce, enforcement is also necessary—several people are cited, vehicles are impounded & skid marks are left behind, blanketing the street.

Minutes later the street racers have found a new spot...the intersection of Manchester and San Pedro in South LA. The taskforce quickly moves in to breakup the takeover of the intersection. For innocent motorists & pedestrians, these takeovers are very dangerous.

The taskforce has been working for a couple of hours by the time we meet up. The first incident is for reports of street racers in the area of Sunset & Alvarado. We have to be extra careful as we also monitor a pursuit only blocks away. Several suspected street racers are cited.

The LAPD Street Racing Taskforce has been in existence for several years and has been covered by local media, such as this story back in 2018. Last night we took a ride-along with them, and got a first-hand look at the work involved. Stay tuned for exclusive coverage.

On Nov. 28 road rage caused a collision at 43rd/Hooper when the passenger in a black SUV, possibly a Chevy/GMC, brandished a gun at the driver of a Mitsubishi & chased them. The Mitsubishi tried to get away but crashed into 2 pedestrians, injuring a 9 yr old & killing his mother.

There's no doubt that 2020 has been a year of hardship. Tonight's Operation Holiday Cheer for the kids of Hospital was an opportunity to shine a little light, put smiles on faces, and remind them that they're not alone.

It was an unusual duo in this A-car... One Deputy Chief, with over 30 years of service & one officer who just finished his rookie year. More than partners on patrol... Deputy Chief Chow & Officer Chow are a father and son duo who took the same oath: “to protect and to serve”.
