Most social games are dominance games. Bizarrely, you can get more value by taking a default submissive stance if people show even slightly dominant behavior. Let them lead the convo and ask lots of questions about their thoughts. Often, you'll learn something interesting.

Don't forget if you question them say some of the last two word they said in their statement in your question. This makes a person feel as though you are listening, and they will divulge more info to validate their stance.
