If you have a particular type of learning style (the one I have) regular school doesn’t teach much more than dealing with jerks vs reading it out of a book or off the internet. Arguably as noted structure can severely stifle learning - my favourite example is the Nordic countries

Not sure this is the period of time we should be using to evaluate online learning overall. Fair to critique and improve of course, but too many additional stressors going on right now for fair comparison to prior norm.
