idk man, product/user experience is not really directly related to measuring and reducing externalities. you could argue indirect either way, could indicate perfectionism or could indicate lack of focus

companies that "do good" might be robust against social forces because it means they have good pr people!

Definitely agree companies try to manufacture positive image with PR but I think that’s different than when your customers walk away delighted to have done business with you. The more superfans a co has the better, I think.

that's what I'm saying, obsessive attention to customer experience pays off massively (and it's taken for granted in startupland this is a huge point of leverage startups have over giant incumbents)

but this is basically unrelated to feelgood "social impact" stuff like carbon offsets and supply chain transparency or whatever

Well IDK I think it actually can be important as an investor to understand a company’s supply chain and its reliance on and bargaining power with its suppliers. Carbon offsets always seemed fake to me tho, I think you’re right.

I mean the "we can trace our goods to the origin as a way to claim they're fair trade conflict free whatevers" not "here's who we buy from here's our leverage here's our backups if that goes sour"

anyway I think we're saying basically the same thing. tech in particular has a strong obsession with user experience, look/feel, all the little rounded corners that we call "product" with a slightly loving intonation

partly cult of jobs partly it just works. what's striking is how badly google fucks this up and how apple is starting to slip, because they *know* how important it is and *still* can't get it right

small aspect of why I'm so obsessed with scaling output but not org. once you get over a certain size doing things right gets really hard

I think that all makes sense. It’s not that long ago we didn’t scale much past village size so it’s not surprising it’s difficult to manage a multinational effectively.
