in particular I'm suspicious of anyone who claims to view a fancy degree as a negative signal but treats the mere fact of having gone through a prestigious accelerator as a positive one

I think about this a lot more concretely now because sooner or later I'll need to hire people I don't already know personally, and honestly more than any credential I'd be looking for smart capable people with weird lives

One thing I've heard in favour of those with degrees is it shows they've been willing to stick at something for a few years. (That they may have stuck at a job instead is a bit different, as they would've been getting paid for that.)

no, trading up is totally normal and sensible, it's how climbing the ladder works in this era. on the contrary I'd be nervous about it because it signals dedication, to career, to a particular lifestyle, etc

someone who goes from one of the big five to another, then to a hot late-stage startup, then starts looking at early-stage startups, is in my mind worryingly conventional in absence of contrary evidence

I think I understand.
People with conventional behavior are less likely to be the unique and creative thinkers you're looking for, whereas dropouts and people who quit $GOOG after a year clearly think differently?
