Does anyone have a grip on the game theory behind how there are so many relevant political parties in Canada, which seems to be a FPTP system? The U.S. seems rare actually in only having the two.

Having two parties is the joke, tho. It amounts to a Hobson's choice. A better system would represent the diversity of opinion better, giving minority opinion some representation.
