One thing about the college admissions scandal that I think is overlooked is that life isn't a pure meritocracy. Path dependency has an impact across generations and can push down great talent and elevate mediocre talent. We do a disservice to people when we pretend otherwise.

Which I guess is just to say, the outrage over this is misplaced because it's just one iteration of the universal truth that there is no such thing as a level playing field. We probably wouldn't like it very much even if we had one.

I like the second level thinking in there. And the part about graduating from high school as one form of merit hooked me, too.
