UPDATE*** 70 firefighters and paramedics on-scene and committed to providing care for those injured. FFs working to confirm substance dropped by aircraft, although initial reports stated smell of jet fuel in area.

UPDATE*** 17 children and 6 adults (23 patients total) all complaining of minor injuries being triaged by LACoFD Paramedics and Firefighters.

UPDATE*** Patient count updated to 17 children, 9 adults. All minor injuries w/ no transports to local hospital from school. There are no evacuation orders for the immediate area. Substance was confirmed JET FUEL. Refer to school regarding plans for child pick-up.

This may be crazy a question but could fuel dumps contribute to our devastating "wildfires on steroids" nightmare? How common is this?

It's a standard safety measure for an aircraft preparing to make an emergency landing. Apparently Delta 89 had just left Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on its way to Shanghai, had some sort of mechanical issue, and had to return to LAX. Dumped some over the ocean too.

Do flights have to report theses kind of airdrops, and is there protocol on place to then alert schools/first responders of their course of action!?

Yes they do, the entire process and allowance of fuel dumps are managed by FAA. Emergency may not have allowed them time to dump at higher altitude or over ocean, and an overseas flight cannot land with full fuel as too heavy for the stress on airframe or landing gear.
