No. This is bad advice. People who have compromised immune systems, and people taking care of them, should absolutely wear medical grade masks if available to them, if they need to go out for lab tests, necessary shopping, trips to pharmacies, etc.

They are trying to get the medical grade stuff to protect the healthcare workers. Home made stuff will have to do for social masking.
