    I was saddened to hear the great journalist Jim Lehrer had passed away. The Jim Lehrer News Hour was one of the 1st national news shows to ask the hacker community and about govt security. Here is the segment "Hacking Around" from 5/8/1998.

    This is 366 days old, but since it was in response to the the anniversary of L0pht's merger with ATstake and yesterday was the 20th anniversary of that, let's recognize 's understatement. Not a scratch - countless deep gouges with ripples that are still being felt.

    Before everyone gets all melancholy on me, this was a necessary step, we really could not accomplish what we wanted to by maintaining the status quo. Sure our implementation could’ve been better, but I still think we made a scratch in the universe.

    Can you imagine understanding Unix password security without Crack and Windows passsword security without L0phtcrack? Prevent the vulnerabilities offensive tools exploit.

    So it's 28 years after I published the "Crack" password cracker, and people are still trying to make the argument that "Access To 'Offensive' Security Tools Can And Should Be Restricted" People: Stop it. /cc

    We've been talking about BGP vuln's for 31 years. I think the famous testimony referred to it in 1998. Video:

    BGP routing has been a known security problem since the 90s () yet providers like and others refuse to make the changes they know they need to make to fix it. Maybe a prominent victim like will finally get them to take action.

    In an interview the person leaned over to me and whispered that he was Mudge from the l0pht and that he wrote l0phtcrack... don’t tell anybody. I never told him who I was, but I had fun asking about some of the horrible coding choices I... errr... he had made in l0phtcrack.
