(Saint) Lawrence was put to death in 258 by Roman Emperor Valerian (r. 253-60), the first to be captured by enemies [the Persians], during a persecution of Christians, roasted on a slab, and is supposed to have said, "Turn me over, I'm done this side", which deserves to be true.
