Catherine the Great almost certainly had her husband, Peter III, murdered after she had orchestrated the coup against him, and her son and successor, Paul I, was also murdered in a palace coup, but that was the last time. (The last assassinated Tsar was Alexander II in 1881.)

The question over Catherine the Great's son and successor, Paul, is whether his father really was Peter III. If not, then the Romanov ruling line in Russia was broken a century and more before 1917.
