How does antibiotic resistance evolve after a history of relaxed selection on this trait? We address this question in our new preprint on with Thomas LaBar, , and !

I wrote R code to perform multiple randomization tests each with 1 million trials. I started the analysis last night ~11pm and it's still going 13 hours later. However, I'm not sure if it froze along the way. Is it possible to show progress in the R console?

Interested in how populations adapt to a new niche to which they have gained access following the acquisition of a novel trait? Our preprint addresses this question. Here is a short thread on some of our findings 1/

How often have you seen this approach being used? Do you use it in your meetings? Has it been successful? It seemed to work well in each instance that I’ve seen it used. However, I wonder how much more progress could be had if this method is universally adopted? (7/7)

This procedure ensures that diversity of opinion is maintained, and not unduly influenced by those individuals who speak early and assertively. This method also empowers individuals from marginalized backgrounds who may otherwise go unheard. (6/)

Therefore, in situations where group decisions are to be made it is best to prevent group members from initially influencing each other. So, for example, at the beginning of a meeting each member should write a brief summary of their position. (5/)

Or in other words, the errors tend to cancel out. On the other hand, if the observers influence each other, then their judgments are no longer uncorrelated, and the precision of the group estimate becomes inaccurate because there is an effective reduction in sample size. (4/)

If you get a group of 100 people together and ask each person to estimate how many pennies are in a jar, you will find a large variation in guesses. If these judgments are made independently, then one can average the judgments and this average tends to be accurate. (3/)

For example, Kahneman discusses the “halo” effect – our tendency to bias our opinion of a person or situation based upon first impressions. He argues that to guard against this bias one should “decorrelate error”. (2/)

I am currently reading Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. Apart from being a fantastic read so far, it’s causing me to think more critically about how I think, and how I arrive at judgments and decisions under uncertainty. (1/)
