Those are beautiful and incredibly complex instruments. They must be very difficult to play.

They say so many strings is 20th century thang, folk would play typical lute with 5-12 strings so those were classical mistrels, like that Dandelion guy from the Witcher.

Holy crap, sometimes up to over 60 strings. I don't see any frets either. At least with a 12-string acoustic guitar you can pluck two strings grouped together and mentally look at it like one string. Can't imagine the different tuning combinations.
