    4. We should *ask* the ppl who leave whether and how they use their training. I'm thinking particularly of our military colleagues who get funded for 3yrs then have to leave. (This is anecdotal. Is it true?) They should have since great insight.

They had access to our database of political party development programs in over 50 countries? Looking back, that was a big missed opportunity.

    3. We shouldn't discount the benefits for knowledge production by having mor PhDs outside of academia. At one of my old jobs, I couldn't engage with the academic litt, even though it was exactly in line with that litt. And what could comparative politics researchers do if...

    2. Knowledge production sites occur outside academia, but perhaps not the type that would be helpful in getting tenure. Think tanks, FFRDCs, GAO, leg committees: these have all produced research I've relied upon. And that's just in international relations.

Data science is the same way. You don't need a PhD to learn, write, and run code. It's just something many PhDs pick up along the way.

    1. What's the likelihood of the professional career becoming the first choice? I'm skeptical it'll become that, because you don't need a PhD to do nearly any job in industry. In fact, I was told that staying in foreign policy would be a faster way to the academy...

I only want to add one thing to this touching thread about how difficult the academic job market can be. It takes tremendous effort to get a TT job. But even then, it's okay to leave if that's ultimately better for you, your work, your family, your sanity, or your life.

Outstanding and insightful piece on the panic and problems caused by the CCP's response to the coronavirus.

    1. Democracy is messy 2. Accurate results > quick results 3. Distributed voting + paper backups = extremely hard to hack, relatively easy to fix 4. Real danger to democracy is rush to judgment. It's *okay* for results to take time to come out, so long as they're accurate.

Exactly why I've ignored takes from Lowry and Wehle. Looking for an excuse to blame Dems for something that wasn't going to happen anyway, and forgetting Dems might be choosing a diff strategy in light of that fact.
