I don't really understand this change. What's the reason for doing this? The reason stated in the article isn't really clear. Can you address it?

Our old system didn’t “verify” much except that a channel had 100k subs. This change lets us make verification more helpful for people trying to find the official channel of the creator they’re looking for. You can always appeal too & we’ll take a look before the change happens.

It doesn't make it more helpful to unverify a bunch of people. I'd like to state that Klautos is my official channel. But I'm not very important so people can impersonate me all they want, is that it? This decision makes zero sense to your core creators who GREW YouTube for you

Its not about the creators man. It makes sense from a corporate greed standpoint though.

That's the only way to make sense of it. They want to value mainstream media over the individuals who grew youtube from the ground up. It's like euthanizing the sled dogs who pulled you to the top of a mountain so you can hold up a sign promoting Hollywood.

Thats the best way Ive heard it put. Theyre covering thier asses so they arent seen as "endorsing" anyone with radical view points. Same thing happened to twitter. Thats why they nixxed verification too.
